EllaLink & EMACOM launch the “EllaLink GeoLab” SMART submarine cable initiative

Dublin, Ireland and Funchal, Madeira, Portugal – 29 June 2020 Seismology, volcanology, marine ecology, and oceanic conditions are key to understanding the future of our planet. EllaLink is proud to contribute to such understanding by launching the EllaLink GeoLab initiative which aims to provide the scientific community with real-time, accurate and relevant data on seabed conditions. This initiative will be the first dedicated facility of its kind as part of a telecoms submarine cable.

The EllaLink GeoLab infrastructure will be provided by EllaLink in cooperation with EMACOM. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) Technology will be used on cable a dedicated fibre in the Madeira Branch of the EllaLink System. It will collect data along the route which will be optically transmitted back to the shore, independently and without impacting either telecoms traffic or the design life of the cable, making EllaLink in to the first system to integrate SMART cable concepts.

The Research and Education (R&E) community in Europe will enjoy access to the data generated by the EllaLink GeoLab initiative. For this, EllaLink is collaborating with GÉANT and the Portuguese NREN, FCT, both members of the BELLA Consortium, who will use EllaLink cable to support R&E collaborations between Europe and Latin America.

RENTELECOM and EllaLink close agreement for dark fibers to foster Data Center connectivity between Europe and Latin America

Dublin, Ireland and Lisbon, Portugal – 16 January 2020 – The EllaLink Group has closed an agreement with RENTELECOM, a Portuguese public telecommunications network operator, to use dark fibers in Portugal and Spain for data center interconnection. RENTELECOM offers the largest neutral backbone in Portugal with more than 8,100km of fiber optic cables within their electricity and gas transport domains. EllaLink will integrate RENTELECOM’s fibers in its optical platform to enhance its services from Sines to Madrid and Lisbon. The protected fiber ring will connect all the major data centers of both capital cities allowing EllaLink to serve PoPs with low latency capacity, open spectrum and managed spectrum services directly towards Fortaleza, São Paulo and Rio in Brazil.

In Sines, fibers will be used to connect the Sines Tech– Innovation & Data Center Hub, which is strategically positioned for the joint development of subsea cable systems and data center infrastructure, both at the core of today’s Internet.

EllaLink receives Global Carrier Award for Best Subsea Project of the Year

Dublin, Ireland – 4 November 2019 – EllaLink has received a Global Carrier Award in the illustrious category “Best Subsea Project of the Year” during a ceremony held in London and taking place as part of the Capacity Europe 2019 conference. This much coveted award demonstrates true recognition of the project’s success from industry leaders, peers and the market at large.

EllaLink and Telxius collaborate to bring next generation connectivity to Latin America and Europe

Dublin, Ireland and Madrid, Spain – 28 October 2019 – The EllaLink Group and Telxius, the telecommunication infrastructure company of the Telefónica Group, announced today that they have signed a collaboration agreement for international subsea capacity and terrestrial connectivity in Latin America, including cable landing facilities in Fortaleza, Brazil. The complementary infrastructure owned by EllaLink and Telxius will enable European traffic to reach Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and other key cities in Brazil and across Latin America.

Already under construction, EllaLink is an open state-of-the-art 4 fiber pair submarine cable system designed to satisfy the growing demand for traffic between Europe and Latin America.  The system will offer the first ever direct fiber route between the two regions, thus avoiding the traffic congestion of the North Atlantic and offering the absolute lowest latency when compared to existing routes. EllaLink achieves major project milestones: marine survey, manufacturing and operator licenses

Dublin, Ireland – 24th October 2019 – EllaLink announced today that it has been granted operator licenses by the Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações (ANATEL) in Brazil and the Autoridade Nacional de Comuniçaões (ANACOM) in Portugal. With marine survey operations completed and commencement of manufacturing activities the EllaLink system is on track for being ready for service in 2020.

Government of Mauritania and EllaLink sign agreement to deliver connectivity on the EllaLink Submarine Cable System

Dublin, Ireland and Nouakchott, Mauritania – July 8, 2019 – The Government of Mauritania and EllaLink are pleased to announce the signature of an agreement to strengthen connectivity to Mauritania via the EllaLink submarine cable system.   A dedicated branching unit will be added to the EllaLink system, due to be operational in 2020, enabling Mauritania to enhance local and international broadband access, as well as offering diversity and resilience to the existing telecommunications infrastructure.

The Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, Information and Communication Technologies, Dr Sidi Ould Salem, declared “This agreement confirms our commitment to address the connectivity challenges that Mauritania faces. Internet connectivity is crucial to ensure the Mauritanians have effective and reliable communications services, and to progress the digital transformation of the region.”

Alberto Horcajo & Alessandro Talotta join EllaLink Board

Dublin, Ireland – June 19, 2019 – EllaLink announced today that its main shareholder, the alternative investment fund manager Marguerite, has appointed Alberto Horcajo and Alessandro Talotta to the Board of Directors of EllaLink. Both Alberto and Alessandro have over 20 years’ experience in leading telecommunications companies with relevant expertise in subsea cable systems. Their appointment will be effective from July 1st, 2019.

Alberto Horcajo has held several executive positions successfully implementing major subsea projects at Telxius Telecom, as well as transformation projects in the supply chain domain. Alberto is currently leader at RED COLMENA, experts in developing shared mobile networks in Europe and South America.

Alessandro Talotta has held several executive positions both on the supplier and operator side, developing significant experience in driving service go-to-market strategies in the mobile industry, along with leading the expansion of Telecom Italia Sparkle’s wholesale expansions in the submarine market. Alessandro is currently an advisor for international financial funds.

EllaLink Announces Commencement of Marine Route Survey Activities

Dublin, Ireland – May 6, 2019 – the EllaLink Group announced today that Alcatel Submarine Networks has finalized the Cable Route Study and mobilized the marine survey vessel for the EllaLink submarine cable system. The survey will be performed over the coming months and permit acquisition continues in line with EllaLink’s plans to be Ready for Service by the end of 2020.

EllaLink is a state-of-the-art 4 fiber pair submarine cable system designed to satisfy the growing demand for traffic between Europe and Latin America. The low latency EllaLink route avoids the congestion of the North Atlantic by offering the first ever direct fiber pair between the two continents.

The survey will collect vital data for the project, helping us determine the most effective route between Sines and Fortaleza, from a reliability, environmental and economic point of view. Following completion of the survey work, Alcatel Submarine Networks will commence manufacturing activities ahead of marine operations next year. The EllaLink system is designed to offer 72Tbps of capacity using leading edge coherent technology.
