Sines: Europe’s Atlantic Connectivity Hub
EllaLeaks is back, and Season 3 opens with a bold statement about Portugal’s role in the future of global digital infrastructure.
In the first episode of EllaLeaks Season 3, EllaLink COO Diego Matas takes us to Sines, a city that has quietly become one of the most strategically important connectivity nodes in the world.
From port city to digital gateway
Sines has always been defined by its geography. Positioned at the southwestern tip of Europe, it sits at the natural crossroads between continents. That same geographic advantage that made it a historic maritime hub is now making it indispensable to the global digital economy.
EllaLink’s Vasco da Gama Cable Landing Station in Sines is the European anchor of the first direct submarine cable route between Europe and Latin America, connecting Portugal to Fortaleza, Brazil, with up to 50% lower latency than traditional transatlantic paths via North America.
But the story doesn’t stop there.
The convergence happening in Sines
What Diego describes in this episode goes beyond a single cable. Sines is experiencing a rare convergence: submarine cable infrastructure, data centre campuses, and terrestrial backbone networks are coming together in one location — creating the conditions for a next-generation connectivity hub.
This is what EllaLink calls the Sines Atlantic Hub: a digital port for the 21st century, designed to serve cloud providers, content platforms, and network operators seeking a secure, low-latency, and geographically diverse route between Europe, Latin America, and, increasingly, West Africa.
Why it matters for your business
For organisations operating across the Atlantic (whether in financial services, cloud infrastructure, media distribution, or enterprise networking) the implications are significant:
- Lower latency between Europe and Latin America than any alternative transatlantic route;
- Route diversity away from congested North Atlantic infrastructure
- Access to a growing ecosystem of data centres and network partners co-located in Sines
- A stable, neutral, and independent operator at the centre of it all
