Sines Tech – Innovation Data Center Hub the creation of a digital transition infrastructure ecosystem in Sines
Sines Tech – Innovation & Data Center Hub Community was established by a protocol signed December 15th between several public and private entities committed to the creation of a digital ecosystem, with a center in Sines, that is open, of users and suppliers, where data can be made available, collected securely and shared in the strictest respect for European data privacy regulation.
Sines Tech – Innovation & Data Center Hub is a cluster capable of offering a fully integrated solution for the mooring of submarine telecommunications cables and the installation and operation of data centers, providing unique business opportunities, promoting the Digital Transition of Portugal and Europe, and ensuring equal access to fast Internet connections in all regions of the Iberian Peninsula and Europe.
The Sines Tech – Innovation & Data Center Hub Community gathers a relevant set of entities that, together with EllaLink, contribute to the development of the information and communication technologies cluster, which are dedicated to the management of the territory, the installation of infrastructures and the training of qualified technicians at a national level, namely:
- Sines Municipality;
- aicep Global Parques – Gestão de Áreas Empresariais e Serviços;
- Fast Fiber;
- Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), through its FCCN unit
- IP Telecom
- RENTELECOM
- Sines Tecnopolo;
- START – Sines Transatlantic Renewable & Technology Campus.
It is intended that the Community Sines Tech – Innovation & Data Center Hub creates conditions for information sharing among partners, aiming at the efficient use of resources and cost reduction and promoting the agile installation of new assets in the cluster.
This community intends to contribute to increasing Europe’s digital sovereignty and Portugal’s global competitiveness, which depend on strong internal and external connectivity. Developing both dimensions is a prerequisite for Portugal to be a pillar of a European Union (EU) that wants to be “the most attractive, safest and most dynamic economy in the world.
Portugal can make an important contribution to the implementation of the European Data Strategy, whose main vectors are international connectivity, which supports and accelerates the competitive digitization of the EU economy, and the development of the capacity to store and process data.
Under the recent Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the EU’s Atlantic Data Gateway Platform has been strengthened with the entry into operation of the EU co-funded EllaLink cable. EllaLink links Europe (in Sines) to South America (in Fortaleza, Brazil), is the second largest fiber optic submarine cable mooring hub in the world, but also for data processing in national territory, adding value and boosting Portugal’s digital development.
Sines brings together several competitive advantages, such as the natural conditions of its deep water coast, the scalable availability of certified land for data centers and infrastructure dedicated to ICT, the energy intensity and interconnections (including renewable energy), the availability of water for industrial use and two seawater intake and rejection facilities.
The Sines Tech – Innovation & Data Center Hub, located in the ZILS – Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone, already has the EllaLink Cable Mooring Station (Europe – South America), an investment of 150 million euros. Added to this is a project for a data center with 495MW of power, meaning 3.5 billion euros of investment, the START- Sines Transatlantic Renewable & Technology Campus, which aims to meet the growing demand by large international companies for streaming technology, data processing and storage, social networking and applications companies. Its target customers are giant hyperscalers, which represent more than half of the world’s data traffic.
