Completing the Southern Corridor Ecosystem with direct & diverse connections to LATAM

Internet access demand is on the rise. Global international internet capacity reached 1,835 Tbps, with Africa’s bandwidth growing at a 38% compound annual rate between 2021 and 2025, according to TeleGeography, driving up the reliability, speed, and interconnection requirements users expect and making infrastructure upgrades essential.

Reducing network latency by bringing digital applications and content closer to end-users is one of the industry’s main priorities today. This is exactly the challenge the Iberian Peninsula is addressing as it positions itself as a convergence point for data traffic between Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, a role with significant growth potential for both private and enterprise users.

At the center of this shift is the Southern Corridor, the direct subsea route connecting Europe and Latin America via EllaLink’s optic fibre cable. Unlike traditional routes that pass through Northern Europe, the Southern Corridor offers a shorter, more direct path, translating into lower latency and greater resilience for data traffic between the two continents.

This ultra-low latency, high-capacity route gives companies across industries a real alternative for diversifying their interconnection points. By routing data through the Southern Corridor, Digital Realty customers can scale their networks and expand their operations from Madrid, where the company already operates three datacentres, with a fourth opening next year.

Madrid’s role in this landscape continues to strengthen. According to DE-CIX’s 2025 Annual Report, published in May 2026, connected client capacity at DE-CIX Madrid grew 49% in 2025, reaching 11.5 Terabits, with a 44% increase in 100 GE ports. This growth is part of a broader shift across Southern Europe, which saw over 500 connected networks across 17 locations in 2025.
