EllaLink has worked closely with Infinera Corporation – a leading supplier of SLTE (Submarine Line Terminating Equipment) to create the Virtual Fibre & Managed Spectrum (VFMS) service as a unique complement to our range of open service options for our customers.
Over the past few years coherent transponder technology has dramatically increased long haul submarine cable capacity compared to direct detection systems.
One consequence of this trend is a move to open submarine cable systems that allow the fibre pair operator to closely track transponder technology evolution independently of the wet plant installed, with the goal of optimizing both the available capacity and the maximum wavelength data rates over the cable.
More recently this flexibility to choose best-of-breed transponders has been extended to include spectrum sharing services where multiple fibre “tenants” can share the spectrum within a single fibre pair, and can operate transponders of their choice within that spectrum.
The Virtual Fibre service is designed so that customers can use the transponders of their choice, however EllaLink is working specifically with Infinera to provide the Intelligent Power Management solution that enables the VFE service.
In addition, we have already tested and approved Infinera’s ICE4 and ICE6 based transponders for operation on the platform. Our testing has shown that ICE6 is able to deliver exceptional performance for the two primary design goals in submarine deployment – maximum wavelength data rate or maximum spectral efficiency. ICE6 is unique amongst 5th generation transponders in this respect because it allows full flexibility of both modulation type and Baud rate, including:
