On the other hand, an essential aspect of this cable relates to the monitoring and characterization of seismic activity and the potential to detect movements that may provide early warnings of under-sea earthquakes and landslips that generate tsunami risks.


EllaLink is partnering with the SUBMERSE project, which the European Union funds. This project aims to use existing submarine cables currently used by the research and education networking community to monitor the Earth and its systems.

Apart from the SUBMERSE, EllaLink – as the first ever submarine cable to integrate SMART technology into its design - has developed the EllaLink GeoLab initiative that aims to provide the scientific community with real-time, accurate and relevant data on seabed conditions along the EllaLink cable route. This technology has recently recorded the first seismic activity on a Distributed Acoustic Detection (DAS) installed on Madeira Island, Portugal.
